400 Conejos trying tobalá – at 40% the agave can't really show up
Score: 2.5/5 agaves

- Agave: Espadin, Tobala
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $43 ($$)
Verdict
The espadín-tobalá ensamble is marginally more interesting than 400 Conejos' straight joven – not enough to matter. Tobalá at 40% can't show the aromatic character that makes the agave worth bottling; the proof choice is dictated by Pernod Ricard's distribution targets rather than the agave's needs. The ensamble label is marketing on a bottle where neither agave lands. Consensus matches. Banhez Tobalá at similar money outperforms by a full tier.
Tobalá at 40% is a missed opportunity
Tasting notes
Nose: Faint wildflower up front. Cooked agave, muted smoke underneath
Palate: Light-bodied, you can tell tobalá is in the bottle, but the proof strips most of what makes it interesting
Finish: Slightly sweet – short
The bottom line
Banhez Tobalá at similar money outperforms by a full tier
