Arroqueño-barril ensamble from Tío Pedro Lalo – ambitious but slightly muddled
Score: 3.5/5 agaves

- Region: Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca
- Agave: Arroqueño, Barril
- ABV: 46%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
A serious attempt that doesn't land as cleanly as the single-agave 5 Sentidos bottles. Arroqueño and barril are both dense, mineral-earth agaves that occupy similar palate real estate; pairing them in one bottle asks the blender to make structural distinctions the composition rarely rewards. Tío Pedro Lalo's single-agave bottlings elsewhere in the range are more successful. Consensus matches. A lesson bottle on why some ensambles work and others don't.
Heavy-agave ensambles test the producer's hand
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark fruit, then warm earth, herbal edge
Palate: Dense at 46% but the two agaves don't quite integrate – both want the midpalate
Finish: Warm, uneven. Long
The bottom line
The single-agave arroqueño is the cleaner call
