Verdict
Santa Catarina Minas plus clay pot plus Pedro Hernández is a combination that usually earns a higher grade from us, which is why this release is a small disappointment rather than a failure. The liquid is honestly made; the agave just isn't as lit up as it tends to be in Mal Bien or Mezcalosfera releases of comparable barril. One
The address on the bottle is better than the pour
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet earth, faint anise, cooked pineapple core, old wood
Palate: Barril should be one of the karwinskii family's most expressive members, and at 49% through Tio Pedro's ollas there's structure, but the aromatics feel muted here, the mid-palate flatter than the price implies
Finish: Medium, slightly vegetal
The bottom line
Pass unless you're collecting Tio Pedro's Minas runs; there are livelier barriles nearby
