5 Sentidos Espadin-Tobaziche
Tio Pedro's Minas blend – competent, a little quiet
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: 5 Sentidos
- Maestro: Pedro Hernandez
- Region: Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin, Tobaziche
- ABV: 47.4%
- Price: $125 ($$)
Verdict
Fourteen consensus ratings at 3.8 is about where we end up, the bottle is well-made and the clay-pot Minas pedigree holds, but the two agaves don't compound into something more than their sum. Hernández's straight arroqueño or tobala releases are livelier pickups. Compared to a Banhez ensamble at half the price, this is more polished but not dramatically so. Fine as a staple; not a statement.
Competence at the Minas address still lands above the average shelf
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet stone, then green stalk, faint citrus
Palate: Tobaziche belongs to the karwinskii family and should sharpen the espadín's sweetness; at 47.4% Hernández gets there, but the blend stays in middle gear throughout, nothing wrong, nothing urgent
Finish: Clean, mineral. Medium
The bottom line
A pass if you want a 5 Sentidos highlight; buy if you want a reliable clay-pot ensamble
