5 Sentidos Mexicano
Sergio Juarez's refrescador mexicano – a distinct process, a modest result
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: 5 Sentidos
- Maestro: Sergio Juarez Patricio
- Region: San Agustín Amatengo, Oaxaca
- Agave: Mexicano
- ABV: 46.5%
- Price: $128 ($$)
Verdict
Sergio Juarez Patricio keeps the San Agustín Amatengo refrescador tradition alive, which is genuinely valuable, that alone earns the bottle a look. But this specific release is less distinctive than his tepextate or tobaziche from the same rig, where the agaves push back more. One consensus rating doesn't move us; we come in at 3.5 on straightforward grounds.
The still is more interesting than the agave here
Tasting notes
Nose: A green top over cooked agave, stalk, a trace of mint
Palate: The refrescador (a mostly-obsolete refilipino-type still used in San Agustín Amatengo) produces a distinct, slightly oily texture; at 46.5% the process asserts itself more than the mexicano does
Finish: Herbal
The bottom line
Pass unless you're cataloging refrescador runs; his tepextate is the better pick
