Verdict
5 Sentidos' Guerrero line is one of the more interesting cross-state ventures in mezcal, and Vicencio Miranda's work in Ahuacuotzingo is part of why. This is a good papalote – distinct from the Puebla papalome, distinct from the usual Valles Centrales profile, and a bottle that rewards anyone trying to understand Guerrero's particular register. Two consensus ratings at 3.8 trails us by a shade.
Guerrero's papalote is not Oaxaca's tobalá, and Miranda refuses the comparison
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet grass, then wildflower, cooked agave, faint green pepper
Palate: Guerrero papalote capón is a specific pleasure – the capón harvest concentrates sugars and the agave returns with a particular earthy-floral profile. At 47.5% Miranda lands the bottle in its right register
Finish: Floral, mineral
The bottom line
Worth owning. A Guerrero papalote benchmark in the 5 Sentidos catalog
