5 Sentidos Tepextate - Tio Tello
Tio Tello's tepextate at 45.1%, proof too low, technique keeps it afloat

- Producer: 5 Sentidos

- Region: Miahuatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tepextate
- ABV: 45.1%
- Price: $140 ($$)
Verdict
One consensus rating at 4.5 reads optimistic; we score it 4.0 because of the proof issue. Eleuterio Pérez Ramos is one of Miahuatlán's steadier hands, and the liquid is honestly made, it's just held back by an ABV we'd put 2-3 points higher. Compared with a Vago tepextate at 49%, this has less lift, less carry, less completeness. Not a skip, but the Luis Enrique Juarez tepextate in the same catalog is a better use of the money.
A tepextate rescued by the maestro, not the proof sheet
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet chalk, cucumber skin, wildflower, faint green stem
Palate: At 45.1% we flag the proof problem, but Tio Tello's Miahuatlán experience and copper rig coax more from the agave than most producers could at this ABV – the aromatics thread the palate without the texture collapsing
Finish: Floral, slightly restrained. Stays medium-long
The bottom line
Pass. The Luis Enrique Juarez or Benigno–Javier tepextate will serve you better
