5 Sentidos Tobala - Atenogenes Garcia
García's tobalá from San Isidro Guishe – drier, more mineral, slightly less aromatic than Martinez
Score: 4.0/5 agaves
- Producer: 5 Sentidos
- Maestro: Atenogenes García
- Region: San Isidro Guishe, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tobala
- ABV: 50.15%
- Price: $149 ($$)
Verdict
If Martinez's tobalá is warm and floral, García's is cool and mineral – both are legitimate readings of the agave, and having both in the catalog is the kind of comparative luxury only 5 Sentidos offers. Three consensus reviews at 4.0 aligns. Compared to a NETA tobalá or a Lalocura release, this reads sharper and more austere. Buy it alongside the Martinez version.
Two palenques, two tobalás – same agave, different aesthetic
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet rock, then green pear, wildflower, faint green stem
Palate: At 50.15% this tobalá runs hotter than Martinez's and trades some of the floral lift for additional mineral backbone – a distinctly San Isidro expression of the agave. Copper rather than clay pushes it slightly drier
Finish: Mineral, dry – long
The bottom line
Worth owning. A useful counterpart to the Martinez tobalá
