Admirable Espadin
A producer whose wild-agave bottles work, but the espadín doesn't
Score: 2.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Admirable Mezcal
- Maestro: Eleazar Brena
- Region: San Luis Amatlan, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 44.98%
- Price: $46 ($)
Verdict
A rare case where we'd recommend skipping a producer's entry bottle but buying their range-up. Admirable's wild-agave range (the madrecuishe especially) demonstrates the producer's capability; the espadín at 44.98% comes through like it's made by someone else – the cuts suggest rushed production, and the acetone on the nose is a distillation-fault signal. Community consensus aligns. Buy the Admirable madrecuishe, not the espadín.
Admirable knows wild agave. The espadín suggests the same team doesn't do the joven
Tasting notes
Nose: Faint smoke with cooked agave
Palate: Hot and uneven at 44.98% – the proof isn't the issue, the distillation is
Finish: Slightly bitter – short
The bottom line
Buy the Admirable madrecuishe, not the espadín
