Agua Mágica Ensamble
Espadín-tobalá at 40%. Proof undercuts both agaves
Score: 2.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Agua Mágica
- Maestro: Rogelio Juan Hernandez
- Region: San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin, Tobala
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $80 ($$)
Verdict
A commercial-friendly ensamble that undersells both agaves. Espadín-tobalá at 40% is a composition where neither agave gets enough structural room, espadín needs 43%+ to show, tobalá needs 45%+ for aromatic lift, and combining them at the lower floor delivers silhouettes of both rather than substance. Agua Mágica's production discipline can't overcome the proof choice. Consensus 3.1 is generous.
Commercial ensamble compromising at the proof level
Tasting notes
Nose: Faint wildflower, then cooked agave, soft smoke
Palate: At 40% the bottle reads thin, the tobalá element is barely legible
Finish: Faintly sweet. Short
