Banhez Tepeztate
Tepextate at Banhez cooperative caliber – below the top of the category, well above commercial
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Banhez Mezcal
- Maestro: Apolonio Patricio Lopez
- Region: San Agustín Amatengo, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tepextate
- ABV: 46%
- Price: $104 ($$)
Verdict
A legitimate value tepextate. Tepextate at cooperative pricing is a rare and welcome thing – the agave's 25-year agronomy normally makes specialty-importer economics the only way to bottle it, but Banhez's collective model delivers the agave at 46% at prices that don't require committing a weekend's discretionary budget. Consensus 3.3 is low. A good first tepextate at a sensible price for drinkers building category vocabulary.
Value-tier tepextate is a rare and welcome thing
Tasting notes
Nose: Wildflower, wet stone, white pepper
Palate: Aromatic, tepextate's lift intact, the texture slightly lighter than the reference bottlings
Finish: Cooling, drying. Very long
The bottom line
A good first tepextate at a sensible price
