Bozal Tobala

Bozal's second tobalá release – mid-tier wild at accessible pricing but short of category reference

Score: 3.0/5 agaves

Bozal Tobala bottle
  • Producer: Bozal Mezcal
  • Maestro: Israel Palestino Vasquez
  • Region: San Juan Bautista, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Tobala
  • ABV: 46.2%
  • Price: $150 ($$)

Verdict

Banhez, 5 Sentidos, and Del Maguey all ship better tobalás at similar money – the category has enough competition that a middle-tier bottling needs to earn its space, not just occupy it. Bozal's production is clean; the agave selection on this specific release isn't special enough to justify the shelf. Skip; buy Banhez Tobalá instead.

Not every tobalá is a reference tobalá

Tasting notes

Nose: Wildflower, then sweet smoke, ripe citrus

Palate: Aromatic at 46.2%. Floral without distinguishing depth; a reasonable mid-tier tobalá that doesn't quite clear the category's benchmark at its price point

Finish: Floral, drying, with a slow smoke fade

The bottom line

Banhez Tobalá outperforms at meaningfully lower money
