Brusco Sierra Negra
Sola de Vega sierra negra at 45% – Brusco's wild-agave arm, and the range's most interesting bottle
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Brusco Mezcal
- Maestro: Eleuterío Ogarrio
- Region: Sola de Vega, Oaxaca
- Agave: Sierra Negra
- ABV: 45%
- Price: $55 ($$)
Verdict
Regional character over producer character – Sola de Vega's lean mineral signature shows without the extra honey-weight Miahuatlán versions often carry, and 45% keeps sierra negra readable if not fully concentrated. Buy it next to a Miahuatlán sierra negra (El Jolgorio's or 5 Sentidos') to hear the village-to-village distinction most producers smooth over.
Sierra negra at mid-tier prices is welcome in an otherwise undersupplied category
Tasting notes
Nose: Warm earth, then dried herb, mineral damp
Palate: Dense, sierra negra's weight is readable at the mid-tier proof. Sola de Vega production runs leaner than Miahuatlán, and Brusco's bottle reflects it, the sierra negra's austere iron-tinged signature comes through without the extra honey-weight Miahuatlán versions often carry
Finish: Long, drying, limestone, with a slow earth fade
The bottom line
A respectable Brusco
