Bruxo No. 5 Tobala
Tobalá without enough conviction to really land
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Bruxo Mezcal
- Maestro: Candido Reyes, Cesareo "Hero" Rodriguez
- Region: Las Salinas, San Agustín Amatengo, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tobala
- ABV: 46%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Bruxo's tobalá is polished past the point where the agave can argue for itself. Tobalá's whole case is drama – floral lift, mineral weight, the aromatic insistence that made the category's reputation – and this bottle has been sanded down to distribution-friendly. Banhez Tobalá costs less and says more. The 3.8
Commercial tobalá is a tricky balance. Bruxo doesn't quite find it
Tasting notes
Nose: Wildflower, soft smoke, faint citrus
Palate: Thinner than most tobalás at 46% – the aromatic lift is there but the texture isn't
Finish: Floral, clean – medium
The bottom line
Banhez Tobalá is the better buy at the same price
