Verdict

Heirloom azul at 70% drinks closer to a focused ingredient than a finished spirit – the Jalisco heirloom program becomes almost analytical at still-strength. For drinkers calibrated on high-proof work, this is a category education. For anyone else, start with Caballito Cerrero's standard azul; the puntas isn't the gateway.

Heirloom azul puntas is a specialist's drink and a category education in concentrated form

Tasting notes

Nose: Intense cooked agave, then citrus, hot alcohol, warm earth and a faint mineral high note

Palate: Concentrated at 70% – the azul character survives the proof, which is the whole test of a puntas bottling

Finish: With a slow slate-tinged fade

The bottom line

A 70% azul study, not a starter pour
