Cómplice Tepeztate Jabalí Tobalá
Three wild agaves, one bottle, a lot to prove
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Cómplice Mezcal
- Maestro: Epigmenio Martínez Pérez
- Region: Santa Maria Albarradas, Oaxaca
- Agave: Jabali, Tepextate, Tobala
- ABV: 46%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Three wild agaves in one bottle is an ambitious choice and Cómplice nearly carries it – but at 46% the jabalí and tepeztate get edged out by the tobalá's easy charm. Pour this alongside the brand's single-varietal tepeztate; the comparison tells you why single-varietals usually win. Good argument, incomplete proof of concept.
An ensamble that almost gets where it's going
Tasting notes
Nose: Green pepper, then melon rind, a lactic whisper, honey
Palate: 46% is a shade light for this trio – tepeztate and jabalí want more room, and the tobalá's sweetness fills gaps the proof can't
Finish: Herbal, faintly sweet – medium-long
The bottom line
Interesting exercise; buy the single-varietals instead
