Verdict
The Del Maguey tobalá is one of the easier entry points into the agave that made modern mezcal's reputation. It's not the most textural or singular tobalá on the market, but it's an honest one at a price that isn't punishing.
Tobalá's character is fragile. Del Maguey respects it
Tasting notes
Nose: Wildflower honey, then warm citrus, pine, a whisper of smoke
Palate: Clean, bright, distinctly floral, the tobalá signature presented with care. 46% is an appropriate frame
Finish: Mineral, faintly sweet
The bottom line
A credible tobalá introduction. The village expressions above it are even better
