Verdict

Delirio's añejo is a competent example of aged mezcal as a category, though the 40% ABV means the barrel does most of the talking. Pass in favor of Cuentacuentos' unaged ensambles if you want the producers' work unmediated. Aged mezcal can be interesting but needs proof to give the oak something to work with – this bottle doesn't quite have it.

An añejo that leans on the barrel because the proof won't carry the spirit

Tasting notes

Nose: Vanilla, caramel, oak spice, a hint of cooked agave

Palate: Espadín and karwinskii aged at 40% under Fernando Santibañez and Ricardo Gonzalez – the oak adds sweetness where the low proof leaves holes

Finish: Woody, warming – medium

The bottom line

A drinkable añejo; the joven-side catalog is more honest
