Delirio Reposado
Reposado at 40%. The barrel can't save low-proof espadín
Score: 2.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Delirio Mezcal
- Maestro: Fernando Santibañez, Ricardo Gonzalez
- Region: Miahuatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $63 ($)
Verdict
Delirio's reposado takes the already-compromised joven and adds barrel time instead of proof, which compounds the problem rather than solving it. Pass; reposados generally don't earn their keep and this one particularly doesn't. Buy the Derrumbes Guerrero cupreata for real character at the same money, or simply skip the reposado category altogether until a producer bottles one at 45%+.
Oak doesn't rescue proof; it only decorates
Tasting notes
Nose: Light oak with faint cooked agave
Palate: 40% ABV after barrel rest, the oak is doing all the flavor work and the agave is barely present
Finish: Woody, thin – medium
The bottom line
Skip; reposado at 40% isn't doing what reposado is supposed to do
