Verdict

Derrumbes is the Casa Lumbre project giving each mezcal state its own bottle, and Guerrero's is the catalog's headliner. Israel Ríos Bucio's cupreata at 45% is specific, terroir-dense, and honest. Worth picking over a typical Oaxacan espadín at this price if you want to understand why 'mezcal' refers to nine states, not one. Guerrero deserves the attention.

Guerrero cupreata is the rebuttal to the Oaxaca-only mezcal reflex

Tasting notes

Nose: Red apple skin, then green stem, cracked pepper, wet bark

Palate: Israel Ríos Bucio's cupreata at 45% – Guerrero's wild agave speaking in its native language, with a mineral-green pepper spine

Finish: Dry, faintly spicy

The bottom line

Track it down. The Derrumbes Guerrero is the state's ambassador
