Verdict
Pechuga is a redistillation tradition with a turkey in the pot; Diaz Brothers swaps the bird for Chicago's Dark Matter Coffee and the result is more interesting than a gimmick has any right to be. Buy this for an espresso martini that has something to say, or pour it neat when you want the pechuga tradition interrogated rather than repeated. Honest experimentation.
A pechuga that replaced the turkey with a bag of beans – and it works
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark roast coffee, cocoa, cooked agave, a savory smoke
Palate: Carlos Mendez Blas's Matatlán pechuga redistilled with Dark Matter Coffee beans at 46% – the coffee transforms the traditional pechuga basket into something between a dessert spirit and a sipper
Finish: Warming, bitter-sweet – long
The bottom line
A novelty pechuga that earns its concept
