Verdict
Diaz Brothers' tobalá uses a different maestro than the espadín – Fortunato Hernández in Chichicapam rather than Carlos Mendez Blas in Matatlán – and the bottle is better for the specialization. 46% is a shade light for tobalá but the agave's floral spine survives. Buy it over Banhez's tobalá if you want Chichicapam terroir specifically.
A tobalá from a less-famous maestro that holds its own on shelf
Tasting notes
Nose: Honey, stone fruit, dry chamomile, a mineral lift
Palate: Fortunato Hernández's Chichicapam tobalá at 46% – cleanly floral and honest, though 48% would have given the agave more room
Finish: Medium-long, dry, faintly sweet
The bottom line
A credible tobalá; buy for the terroir difference
