Don Lorenzo Tobala Reposado
Tobalá in wood – a category we keep wanting to skip
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Don Lorenzo Mezcal
- Maestro: Antonio Hernandez Lopez
- Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tobala
- ABV: 49.5%
- Price: $150 ($$)
Verdict
Don Lorenzo's own joven tobalá is a better use of the same liquid – this reposado trades the agave's perfume for eleven months of American oak, and the trade doesn't land. Wood almost always costs tobalá more than it pays it. Pass unless you already love oak-forward sipping spirits and want the Oaxaca accent.

Tasting notes
Nose: Vanilla with stewed honey, muted floral
Palate: The barrel flattens what tobalá does best. American oak smooths the florals into a single caramel note; 49.5% keeps the texture alive but the aromatics stay under a wood blanket
Finish: Sweet, oak-led. Stays medium
The bottom line
Pass. Get the joven instead
