Verdict

Tobalá at 45% falls into the same undersell pattern the rest of the mid-tier tobalás do – the aromatics are audible but never fully concentrated into the density the format promises. Martínez Pérez production is competent; the proof is the ceiling. Buy Banhez Tobalá or Del Maguey Tobalá instead; the Dos Pasiones cuishe or tepextate are the better picks in this brand's range.

A mid-tier tobalá that shows the shape of the agave at modest proof

Tasting notes

Nose: Wildflower, sweet smoke, ripe citrus, a faint honey note, dried-herb underneath

Palate: Mid-tier tobalá. The floral character holds and the agave is clearly legitimate, but the texture is lighter than 48-50% tobalás deliver; you get the aromatics without the corresponding density; aromatic at 45%

Finish: Floral, with a slow honey fade – long

The bottom line

Fine; higher-proof tobalás deliver more
