Verdict
San Juan del Rio runs slightly more mineral than Matatlán – this isn't a generic Oaxacan espadín, it's a locally-flavored one, and El Mito de Zaragoza doesn't paper over the distinction the way more-distributed producers tend to. Buy it for the village lesson; the producer is under-distributed enough that the bottle is a small find even when it doesn't become a benchmark.
The El Mito espadín punches above its price tier
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave, then warm stone, mineral damp, a clear smoke note and trace of dried herb
Palate: Dense at 48% – the producer's cut is disciplined and consistent across the bottle
Finish: Drying, slate-tinged, with a slow smoke fade. Very long
The bottom line
A sleeper pick worth hunting
