El Recuerdo de Oaxaca Joven

A commercial Oaxacan joven at 40%, the airport-bar staple, dressed in tradition packaging but built for mass distribution

Score: 3.0/5 agaves

Verdict

Fine for mixing, forgettable on its own. Commercial Oaxacan mezcal at commercial economics, the bottle does its job behind a bar and nothing more. Buy Vida instead; Del Maguey's workhorse is the same cocktail-base tier with actual category reputation behind it.

Commercial Oaxacan at commercial proof, engineered for the distribution tier

Tasting notes

Nose: Cooked agave with banana candy

Palate: Thin at 40%. Correct commercial production with a manufactured smoothness that reads as character-removal, the agave is present but flattened, the smoke is present but diluted, and the mid-palate evaporates before you can locate it

Finish: Short, dry, with a faint smoke fade

The bottom line

Fine for cocktails
