Exiliado Espadin
Espadín at 46% – Exiliado's standard entry, correctly proofed but without distinguishing character
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Exiliado Mezcal
- Maestro: Artemio Garcia Cruz
- Region: San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 46%
- Price: $50 ($)
Verdict
Skip the espadín and buy Exiliado's tobaziche or coyote instead – the producer is clearly capable elsewhere in the range, but this is the distribution-tier bottle that subsidizes the more interesting work. A credible espadín, nothing worse and nothing better. The rest of the catalog argues for itself more persuasively. Consensus 3.3 matches the ambition.
A working commercial espadín from a producer who does more with wild agaves
Tasting notes
Nose: Warm stone first with faint smoke, a trace of green apple
Palate: Clean at 46%. Standard commercial espadín, correctly proofed, without distinguishing character – competent from front to back, forgettable from a distance
Finish: Drying, with a slow smoke fade
The bottom line
Fine as a house espadín
