Fanekantsini Barril
Single-agave barril at 50%. The quieter Fanekantsini, a bottle that rewards attention without demanding it
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Fanekantsini
- Maestro: Sosima Olivera
- Region: San Francisco Sola, Oaxaca
- Agave: Barril
- ABV: 50%
- Price: $60 ($$)
Verdict
Pour this solo barril if you want to hear the agave without ensamble interference – the Olivera discipline holds, and the Jalisco frame pushes the register drier than any Oaxacan barril you've probably tasted. A legitimate standalone bottling on an agave usually hidden in blends. Consensus 3.5 is fair; the range elsewhere in the catalog is more exciting, but this is the vocabulary pour.
The sleeper Fanekantsini for drinkers who already own the flashier ones
Tasting notes
Nose: Warm earth. Then dried herb, cooked agave
Palate: Dense at 50% – barril's character intact, without the drama of the sierra negra releases
Finish: Drying, warm, with a slow earth fade – very long
The bottom line
A solid category-completion pick for Jalisco collectors
