Fidencio 'Single Cask Nation' Añejo

An añejo that actually benefits from the oak – rare in the category

Score: 3.5/5 agaves

Fidencio 'Single Cask Nation' Añejo bottle
  • Producer: Fidencio Mezcal
  • Maestro: Enrique Jiménez
  • Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Espadin
  • ABV: 50.9%
  • Price: $150 ($$)

Verdict

50.9% is appropriate. Most añejo mezcal suffers at commercial proofs where oak dominates a thin base; this one survives the oak because the base bottle was serious to begin with and the cask selection was careful. Single Cask Nation's Fidencio collaboration is a small category argument that aged mezcal can work when every decision upstream is right. Consensus 3.8 is close to right. A rare category success.

Proof that añejo mezcal can be done right

Tasting notes

Nose: Vanilla – then warm spice, cooked agave, dry oak

Palate: The aging adds without smothering – Fidencio's base was strong enough to hold up

Finish: Warm, slightly sweet, long

The bottom line

A credible añejo. Buy it before the importer runs out
