Tobalá at 47% – the bottle undersells the agave even with adequate proof
Score: 2.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Firme Mezcal
- Maestro: Jorge Aaron Mendez Cortes
- Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tobala
- ABV: 47%
- Price: $65 ($$)
Verdict
Pass on this – when a tobalá at 47% fails to develop, the problem isn't the proof, it's something upstream in the sourcing or the cuts or the fermentation, and the bottle shouldn't be released in this state. The tobalá character is barely readable at a spec where Banhez Tobalá sings. A disappointing release that raises production questions. Consensus 2.5 matches; the diagnosis is the bottle itself.
Proof alone doesn't save a weak base
Tasting notes
Nose: Faint wildflower – then muted smoke, thin aromatics
Palate: Thin at 47% – the proof should be enough but the base is undernourished, which is the telling signal
Finish: Muted, with a faint floral fade – short
