Gracias a Dios Cupreata
Gracias a Dios' cupreata – Matatlán's answer to Guerrero
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Gracias a Dios Mezcal
- Maestro: Oscar Hernandez
- Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Cupreata
- ABV: 45%
- Price: $55 ($)
Verdict
Cupreata is a Guerrero agave and when Oaxaca distillers use it the character shifts, less wild, more controlled. Oscar Hernandez's version is clean and competent but not as declarative as Derrumbes Guerrero at the same price. Pass in favor of the Derrumbes bottle if you want the agave speaking its native language, or keep this for the price break.
Cupreata grown out of its home state is cupreata speaking a second language
Tasting notes
Nose: Red apple, green stem, cooked agave, soft smoke
Palate: Cupreata from Matatlán rather than Guerrero – Oscar Hernandez's hand at 45% yields a gentler expression than the Guerrero bottlings
Finish: Clean, mildly sweet – medium
The bottom line
A Matatlán-tamed cupreata; skip if you want the Guerrero version
