Gracias a Dios Tepextate
Commercial tepextate – a wild agave sanded for shelf
Score: 3.1/5 agaves
- Producer: Gracias a Dios Mezcal
- Maestro: Oscar Hernandez
- Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tepextate
- ABV: 45%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Tepextate done for the shelf, not for the agave. GaD underproofs and over-polishes marmorata the way most commercial brands do – if you've had Real Minero or Cuentacuentos tepextate, this one won't convince you. Pass and chase those instead.
Tepextate done for the shelf, not for the agave
Tasting notes
Nose: Light pepper, then cooked agave, faint floral
Palate: Tepextate at 45% in a mass-market format is the category compromise that rarely pays off – the herbal snap is muted, the mid-palate smoothed, the finish tamed. Clean but generic
Finish: Short-medium, mild, sweet
The bottom line
Pass. Real Minero/Cuentacuentos win this agave
