Verdict

Guélavila sierra negra reads different from Matatlán – leaner, drier, a touch more savage. Grulani lets the agave speak in the Guélavila register without softening. Buy as a companion to the Matatlán expressions you already own.

Tasting notes

Nose: Cooked agave up front. Cocoa, dried mint, baked earth underneath

Palate: 46% delivers the americana weight the agave wants. Leonardo Hernandez's sierra negra has tahona texture and a quiet savory drag – cleaner than Don Lorenzo's, less polished than Rey Campero's

Finish: Earthen, warming – long

The bottom line

A buy. Guélavila angle on sierra negra
