Velasco's three-agave, the espadín doing more of the talking

- Producer: Gusto Histórico
- Maestro: Virgilio Velasco Perez
- Region: San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin, Tepextate, Tobala
- ABV: 45.9%
- Price: $150 ($$)
Verdict
Virgilio Velasco Perez is a solid hand out of San Luis del Río, but this ensamble feels weighted toward the espadín in a way that blurs what the wild agaves are doing. At 45.9% the tepextate's mineral top never quite escapes the cooked-agave sweetness. A lesser entry in an otherwise exceptional Gusto Histórico lineup – pass in favor of the Sánchez, Vázquez four-agave, or Ramos bottles.
The tepextate needed more room to speak
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave up front. Honey, green melon, a faint peppery echo underneath
Palate: 45.9% – the San Luis del Río producer's espadín dominates the midline, with tobalá adding sweetness and the tepextate mostly present as a suggestion rather than a pillar
Finish: Clean, a bit muted – medium
The bottom line
