Verdict

The Bautista family's mexicano for Koch is a more substantial reading of the agave than the lighter-than-espadín pitch the varietal often gets sold on. At 47% and from Río de Ejutla, it has real body and aromatic presence. Buy alongside the Gusto Histórico Verde Mexicano for a two-house mexicano education. Koch at its more serious end.

Mexicano done with real weight, not marketing lightness

Tasting notes

Nose: Roasted pepper, then cooked agave, light cacao, dry pepper

Palate: 47% – Adrian and Lucio Bautista's mexicano release reads denser than many mexicanos on the market, with real savory weight and a clean finish

Finish: Warm, savory – medium-long

The bottom line

A buy. Serious mexicano at a reasonable tier
