Verdict

La Jicarita's tobalá is the friendlier version of the varietal, less mineral and severe than Miahuatlán tobalás (Juárez at Gusto Histórico, Real Minero), more rounded and crowd-pleasing. Buy as a first tobalá or a tobalá for mixed company; graduate to the Miahuatlán versions when you want the sharper reading. Competent, not transcendent.

A tobalá that trades edge for approachability

Tasting notes

Nose: Honey, wildflower, green melon, mineral water

Palate: 48% – Martínez López's tobalá is cleanly made and proof-respectable, with the Matatlán softness that makes the varietal slightly more accessible than its Miahuatlán counterparts

Finish: Floral, warm – medium-long

The bottom line

A buy as a social-table tobalá; go Miahuatlán for study
