Verdict
La Medida's arroqueño is the reason the brand is on serious shelves – Cortés Aragón understands the americana doesn't need amplification, and the 46% proof is exactly where this agave wants to sit. Rey Campero's arroqueño is louder; this one is calmer and, to our palate, better company. Track it at retail and don't be surprised when the price climbs. Consensus 3.9; we rate 4.0.
A Miahuatlán arroqueño that keeps its voice down and wins by listening
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked arroqueño's dark-sugar depth, stone fruit, mineral damp, a trace of woodsmoke
Palate: Rich and even at 46%. The americana weight shows in the mid-palate without bullying; Antonio Cortés Aragón runs a shade more restrained than the Matatlán arroqueños, and the Miahuatlán altitude gives it a drier, more wet slate bottom
Finish: Dark, stone-fruited, with a cooling slate-tinged tail. Long
The bottom line
Buy. Quiet, serious arroqueño under $100
