Verdict
La Medida's tobalá is another victim of the brand's sub-46% wild-agave tendency – what Pánfilo put into this distillation doesn't reach the nose at this proof. Banhez's tobalá at 45.4% runs better because it's priced like a first tobalá; La Medida's is priced like a destination. Del Maguey Tobalá at 45% has the same issue.
Tobalá wants altitude in the glass, not just in the field
Tasting notes
Nose: Floral high note, cooked agave
Palate: Bright and restrained at 45%. Pánfilo Hernández Reyes is a serious maestro, but 45% caps tobalá's mineral-floral depth before it can develop. The bottle reads lean where it should read dense
Finish: Floral, clean, short for wild agave. Medium
The bottom line
Pass. Banhez Tobalá is the better entry tobalá
