Verdict

La Tierra de Acre's cenizo is a decent northern-mezcal entry – Derrumbes Durango and Mezonte's Durango work sit above it for depth, but this is more accessible money and a reasonable first cenizo. Burciaga's production runs clean. Consensus 3.6; we agree.

Durango cenizo at 45% is a fair introduction without being a conversion

Tasting notes

Nose: Cooked agave, then dry mesquite, faint mineral

Palate: Middle-weight and clean at 45%. Cenizo (durangensis) runs drier and more mesquite-smoke-scented than southern espadín; Burciaga's hand keeps the profile readable without pushing it

Finish: Mesquite-tinged, cool close

The bottom line

Buy as a first cenizo. Derrumbes for the upgrade
