Verdict

La Venenosa Sierra Volcanes is the Jalisco answer to Durango cenizo – drier, more mineral, less mesquite-forward, and a useful regional contrast for anyone who has the northern cenizos on their shelf. Not as deep as the Etnica line; more distinctive than the Tabernas. Consensus 3.7; we agree.

Cenizo in Jalisco is the same agave speaking a different dialect

Tasting notes

Nose: Dry mesquite with green herb, a faint smoke

Palate: Dry and mineral at 47%. Cenizo in Jalisco reads less smoky than in Durango; the Sierra Volcanes volcanic soil gives the bottle a distinct stone-on-stone midpalate that distinguishes it from northern cenizo

Finish: Mineral, cool close

The bottom line

Buy as a Jalisco cenizo contrast to Durango
