Verdict

Buy this when you want arroqueño reframed as desert austerity – Lagrimas de Dolores Castilla is one of the few serious Durango americana bottlings, and Ávila's production keeps the agave austere without reading as thin. 47% is the right proof. Less opulent than La Medida's Oaxacan arroqueño; more distinctive regionally. Consensus 3.5; we agree.

Durango castilla is arroqueño reframed for the high desert

Tasting notes

Nose: Dark cooked agave, then desert herb, mineral dust, a hint of tobacco

Palate: Dense and desert-dry at 47%. The Durango americana runs leaner than Oaxacan arroqueños – less stone fruit, more flinty austerity, and Ávila's cut is clean enough that the terroir difference lands

Finish: Long, limestone-tobacco, slow cool fade

The bottom line

Buy. Rare Durango americana at correct proof
