Verdict
Lamata Castilla Durango holds its own against Lagrimas de Dolores's similar release – the Maximino Cruz production runs a shade cleaner, and the higher proof gives this one more present density. Both are the right Durango-americana answer; this is the more intense one. Consensus 3.9; we rate 3.5.
Durango castilla is arroqueño's austere northern shadow
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark cooked agave with mineral dust, faint tobacco
Palate: Dense and dry at 51.2%. Maximino Cruz's Durango americana runs leaner than Oaxacan castilla; 51.2% puts the structural weight forward without reading as heat
Finish: River rock, slow cool fade. Stays long
The bottom line
A buy. Dense Durango americana at high proof
