Verdict

Lamata Ensamble Tamaulipas is a document of the Tamaulipas tradition that most brands don't attempt – Castellanos is named on the label, the proof is right, and the regional distinction is audible. Not as integrated as the Oaxaca Jarquín ensamble; more interesting regionally. Consensus 4.1; we agree.

Tamaulipas amole is a frontier variant most shelves don't document

Tasting notes

Nose: Desert herb walks in first. Then wet stone, cooked amole

Palate: Dry and distinctive at 48%. Amole-based mezcal from Tamaulipas is a rarely-shelved category; Castellanos's production keeps the agave character clean, and the ensamble adds regional specificity

Finish: Mineral, cool close – long

The bottom line

A buy. Rare northeast-frontier mezcal
