Verdict

Lamata Lamparillo is direct competition with Lagrimas de Dolores Lamparillo, and the two are effectively tied – pick by price or availability. The Simentals run a more resin-forward profile; Ávila-Roldán run a touch greener. Both represent Durango lamparillo well. Consensus 4.2; we agree.

Lamparillo from the Simentals is the agave showing its drier face

Tasting notes

Nose: Cooked fiber with mineral damp

Palate: Dense and stone-resinous at 48.4%. The Simentals' production runs a shade drier and more concentrated than Lagrimas de Dolores's lamparillo; 48.4% gives the agave the structural room it wants

Finish: Chalky, cool-resin close. Stays long

The bottom line

Buy. Tied with Lagrimas de Dolores's version
