Verdict
Lamata Masparillo Durango from Cruz is a direct, useful counterpoint to Lagrimas de Dolores's version – both are excellent, both at correct proof, and the comparison maps two different maestros working the same regional wild agave. Buy them as a pair. Consensus 4.0; we agree.
Two masparillos in the same frame, two serious Durango hands
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark cooked agave, cedar, tobacco, mineral damp
Palate: Dense and tannic at 48.6%. Cruz's masparillo runs a shade leaner than Lagrimas de Dolores's Enrique de la Cruz version but with the same general profile – tobacco-cedar depth, iron-tinged bottom, wild-agave structure
Finish: Tobacco-wet slate, slow cool fade – long
The bottom line
A buy as pair with Lagrimas de Dolores Masparillo
