Verdict

The Mezcales Únicos line exists to distill agaves that have never been distilled before, which is the kind of sentence that usually precedes disappointment. This one earns it. The montana is strange in the way first-contact mezcal is strange, it doesn't taste like Oaxaca because it isn't Oaxaca. Rodolfo Obregón is documenting a distillate, not selling one, and the bottle benefits from that stance. Track it if you collect agave species, not brands.

A field note from a state nobody else is bottling

Tasting notes

Nose: Green herbs, then dry hay, pepper, a saline edge

Palate: Lean, northern, vegetal in a way that reads almost sotol-adjacent – Rodolfo Obregón is presenting Tamaulipas on its own terms. At 45% the liquid stays coiled rather than expansive

Finish: Dry, mineral, medium

The bottom line

A collector's bottle with a reason to exist
