Verdict
Gerardo Ruelas delivers a credible Durango cenizo under the Mezcal de Leyendas Viñata Solar label, the bottle that earns the region's growing reputation rather than borrowing it. Pour alongside Amaras Logia or Derrumbes Durango to build out a northern flight. Reach for it when you're tired of Oaxaca-only mezcal.
Durango is the second country in mezcal, and bottles like this are why
Tasting notes
Nose: Hot hay, piney menthol, dark honey, cracked black pepper
Palate: 45.9% with cenizo's characteristic herbal, slightly sharp profile fully present, the Durango terroir carries as a different category from Oaxaca, not a worse one
Finish: Warming, mineral
The bottom line
Pour for a northern-Mexico flight. Honest Durango work
