Los Amantes Joven
The handsome bottle has outlasted the liquid inside it
Score: 2.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Los Amantes Mezcal
- Maestro: Eric Hernandez
- Region: Tlacolula, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $53 ($$)
Verdict
Amantes trades on its iconic bottle design, credibly. For $58, fine is a ceiling. The community's 2.8 is about right, and we land just under it. Buy it as decor if you must, and buy the mezcal elsewhere.
The bottle is genuinely beautiful. The mezcal is fine
Tasting notes
Nose: Pear, then white smoke, wet clay
Palate: Light, a little watery, correct but unmemorable at 40% ABV
Finish: Faintly sweet. Stays short
The bottom line
A gift bottle where the packaging does most of the work
