Verdict
40% espadín is where the category puts its cheapest work, and Los Javis' entry lives on that line. The bottle is inoffensive and technically correct, but at this ABV the agave loses its middle. Vida is not a sipping mezcal – it's the most honestly-priced bar-well mezcal the category has, at real proof, and it's the bottle to reach for here. Pass.
Proof at the floor, character at the door
Tasting notes
Nose: Light smoke, cooked agave, cane sugar, a touch of vanilla
Palate: 40% is the number that reveals the bottle's positioning – the espadín is there, but the structure folds before the mid-palate. Clean but palpably thinned
Finish: Sweet, quickly gone
The bottom line
A skip in favor of Vida at similar money
