Mal Bien Madrecuixe / Bicuixe / Tepextate
A three-karwinskii-plus-marmorata ensamble that almost commits
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Mal Bien
- Maestro: Emanuel Ramos, Victor Ramos
- Region: Miahuatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Bicuishe, Madrecuishe, Tepextate
- ABV: 49.94%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
This Ramos blend is a capable bottle that doesn't quite reach the coherence of the four-agave release. The two karwinskii cousins dominate and the tepextate reads as garnish rather than equal partner. Still a real ensamble at a real proof, just not the one in the Mal Bien karwinskii-adjacent catalog we'd pick first.
Strong ensamble, tepextate underplayed
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet hay, green herb, light floral, cool mineral
Palate: 49.94% sits at a useful proof for the blend, madrecuishe and bicuishe drive the structure, tepextate adds lift, but the tepextate component reads a little muted next to the karwinskii mass
Finish: Dry, river rock. Stays long
The bottom line
A functional ensamble. Others in the catalog do more
